Biography

Dr. Ernie Bursey has been a Professor of Religion in the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences since 2001. His current teaching assignments at both the undergraduate and graduate level include World Religions for Healthcare Professions, Identity and Mission in Faith-based Healthcare, and Role Fidelity and the Exercise of Power. He received the Educator of the Year award in 2009. Prior to his appointment at Adventist University he taught 28 years at Walla Walla University, serving most recently as the Dean of the School of Theology. His earned graduate degrees include an M.Div. degree from Andrews University; an M.A. in Religious Studies from Yale University; and a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies from Yale University with his dissertation topic on Exorcism in the Book of Matthew. He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Adventist Society for Religious Studies, serving as President in 2000. He recently completed a commentary on the New Testament book of Romans to be published by Andrews University. Areas of research interest include the Sermon on the Mount, Revelation (NT), and the impact of immigrant religions on American healthcare. He is in the midst of a project funded by an AHU Presidential grant to produce two series of videos, World Religions Meet American Pluralism, and World Religions Meet American Healthcare.
